The ultimate guide to growing cat grass

Last updated Mar 4, 2020 @ 11:31 pm

For indoor cats, the grass is not greener on the outside. Perhaps your cat would disagree, but we know indoor living is the safest place for your cat. Free-roaming cats have a full daily schedule, they hunt, catch, kill, groom, sleep, and nibble on grass at their leisure. To keep your cat happy it’s important to provide a natural, stimulating and changing environment that most closely resembles what he would normally stumble upon in an outdoor kitty expedition. We know that one of the things cats love, next to catnip, is cat grass. What’s great to know is that cat grass is super easy to grow at any time throughout the year.

A water feature you and your cats will love

You have created the perfect outdoor space for your cats and they’re loving it! There are cat grass pots, hanging catnip baskets and various arrangements of other cat safe plants. What more could a happy cat want? But there is something missing. An element that is vital to our wellbeing and is an essential component in the art of feng shui – water, the giver of life.

7 Ways you can help your cat keep his cool in a heat wave

Jimmy the cat demonstrates the best way to keep cool on a hot day

We’re going through another hot spell and the Chirpies are lying around like beached seals. Although we have air conditioning in the house the cats still feel the heat more than we do. Did you see the extra toe floofs on some cats!?

Cats are heat seekers by nature, but they have some clever tricks up their fur sleeves to keep cool when the weather is sizzling hot.

Why this box is the purrfect fit for your kitty

KitNipBox Review and Giveaway with the Chirpy Cats

When I see the familiar box at my front door, I fumble for my keys and can’t get through the door quickly enough! Then there’s the unboxing, with the excitement of tearing through the crinkly packaging and finding a gorgeous new nail shade or hand cream.

But while trying out my new mascara promising luscious lashes my beauty box of goodies is raided by furry paws and curious whiskers, and lands on the floor. There goes the new eyeshadow being batted like a hockey puck across the bathroom floor. Mmm, I guess it’s time to get the Chirpies their very own subscription box.  Read More

Chirpy Cats wins Muse Medallions at the Cat Writers’ Conference

Chirpy Cats wins Muse Medallions at the CWA conference

We sat as usual on our treat stations at 9 pm and nothing was happening. We sat and stared and stared, waiting for that familiar click.

But all we heard was silence and the TV in the background. No treats. Nothing. The Lady Cat was gone and we were left in the care of The Big man Cat.

He said: “No treats for you lot!”

She returned from the Cat Writers’ Association Conference in Houston after four days to announce that we had won something! I wonder if this means we get more treats or she will make up for these four days we were deprived. Ummm, I think she has some explaining to do. Not sure what these silly awards mean and what’s in it for me! Read More

Why your cats would want an Art of Paws heated mat

Art of Paws heated cat bed

When you’re hanging on to the last bit of heat from a long departed sun puddle and curl up into a tight ball of fur it’s time to get comfy on a heated bed.

For a long time, I was on the lookout for a heated bed for our senior cat Earl Grey who, like his mum (moi) is a heat seeker by nature. Earl Grey is our blind senior 17-year-old cat and has CKD (chronic kidney disease). His body has slowed down and he’s always looking for the warmest spot in the house. But warm laps are not always available throughout the day, so what is an old cat to do?  Read More

Caturday Art: The Making of Sarabi the Cat Sculpture

One of my other passions is makings things by hand and seeing how it transforms into something new.

Whether it’s getting my hands dirty in the garden and watching things grow, or shaping a piece of clay and seeing what it becomes. Many of my Caturday Doodles are digital drawings. I like doing digital art, but much like the red dot means for cat, you can feel it but can’t touch it. Making sculptures is such a tactile medium and is literally ‘hands-on.’  Building those layers and shaping a piece of art is the most relaxing way to spend your weekend! It’s even sweeter when the subject is my all time favorite muse, cats! What else?  Read More

Day Zero and what it means for the shelter pets of Cape Town

Water for paws donates water to animal shelter

Shelter cats at the Lucky Lucy Foundation examine the water bottles they received from Water for Paws.

Can you imagine a world in which your city is forced to shut off the taps and you and your pets no longer have access to running water? How would you cope if your water was rationed and you had to queue in line to get your daily quota of only 25 liters of water?

If it sounds almost apocalyptic and scary, for people living in the bustling coastal city of Cape Town, South Africa, this is about to become a reality.
