Sunday Selfie: Pansy Buffet for Ollie

Holiday Sunday Selfies with Charlie, Brrrrrr!

Amidst the holiday rush of the last few weeks, there were two things that put a smile on my face. One was undoubtedly my cats who make me smile every day. Especially my older 16-year-old cat, Earl Grey, who reminds me to live in the moment and cherish those 5-minute bonding brushings before leaving for work. And the other was receiving so many cute cards from cats and dogs around the globe. And then the e-cards came flooding in too! We loved each and every one of it and would like to say thank you to all of you! Read More

Sunday Selfie: Sweet Jelly beans and other assorted flavors

Last updated September 2nd, 2018

They’re soft, oval, smooth and come in a variety of assorted hues, such as pink, black and chocolate. When we look at them, we might be forgiven for thinking they’re sweet. They’re neatly embedded in and surrounded by what seems to be a floof of cotton candy in a rich variety of colors. In some cases there’s more floof than beans! If you’re just as obsessed with kitty bean toes as we are, you would have gathered by now that we’re not talking about a bag of candies or licorice allsorts, we’re talking about kitty jelly beans!

Summer is not over until the lady with the golden crown has sung her sweet cheery song of delight and optimism. Yes, the sunflowers have finally shown their bright vibrant faces and we are loving it! Sarabi and Mr. Jack make the most of a sunny Sunday in the tunnel while the sunflowers belt out their dramatic arias with “Hello, we’re here!”

I see the world through my heart

Last updated January 14th, 2018

“He’s gone blind” I texted my husband, just a week after invasive dental surgery on our 15-year-old CKD cat, Earl Grey.
“That can’t be possible, I saw him climbing on the bridge this morning.”

I observed every step he took, watched every movement closely. Yes, our cat has become blind, overnight. Our beloved Earl Grey is struggling to find his way around the house. He is trying to desperately rediscover every corner, sniffing every inch of surface, treading lightly with each hesitant paw. His slow movement is not just weakness from the surgery or muscle atrophy from his kidney disease. His eyes are dilated black saucers, trying desperately to catch any light, just any at all. His head sways in the general direction of my voice as I try to soothe him with calming words.

At this moment I try to recall if this was a sudden onset or was he like this when he returned home after spending two nights at the vets after his surgery. Were his pupils this dilated and vacant? I can’t recall through my utter devastation. But how was he able to climb up to the bridge?

Our vet confirmed he has high blood pressure and this, coupled with the four-hour long surgery to remove ten teeth and the myriad of drugs administered to keep him alive during his surgery, were all contributing factors to his loss of sight. Having kidney disease did not help his situation either.

In every situation, there is light at the end of the tunnel, albeit for him, a very dark tunnel. We know his mouth is pain-free now as he is wolfing down his food. A huge relief!

My mum asked, “but how will he get by?”

Keep it Short and Sweet

Last updated February 22nd, 2018

“You want a Sunday Selfie? Sure I can do one or two, but make it quick! I have places to go and things to see.”

When branches are swaying and leaves are moving, the pitter patter of little tuxedo capri pants paws are itching to leave their prints through the tunnels to investigate. Sly Pie sits for a minute and shows off his new layers ready for winter.

The Cats and the Squirrel and the Chirpy Toons

Squirrel after sunflowers

There’s nothing wrong with wanting it all.

Determination and tenacity will eventually earn you the prize, but sometimes you need a trick or two up your sleeves. If you’re a squirrel surrounded by five pairs of glaring cat eyes while gathering up your sunflowers heads, your bag of party tricks should include more than just being nimble. You need to fly, or at least pretend that you can. Mr Squirrel and his bandit friends had their eyes on the largest sunflower heads near the catio and no amount of cat threats were going to deter them from getting their paws on the bigger booty. No, he had his eye on the prize so in one fell swoop he jumped from the balcony onto the roof of the catio, and then bounced onto the main catio beams, trying to dodge Ollie’s paws that were trying to reach out and grab him. What he did next was straight out of a scene from the Looney Toons…

Along came a spider

Last updated February 22nd, 2018

It’s Sunday Selfie time and it’s Mr. Jack here, also know as Jackaboo to my people when I’m being cute, like today. You see, we are not the only ones who love our catio. We have plenty of other company ranging from yummy earthworms on the grass patch which surface after our thunderstorms, to hairy worms (yuck) and then the most invasive and audacious of all, the spider! These eight-legged little beasties weave their webs all over our plants and we mostly just admire them from a distance. The Big Lady Cat used to fear spiders but has learned to live with them as they are a part of the hot humid Quebec summers and they help to keep many other undesirable pests away. Besides, trying to exterminate them will cause us and our ecosystem much harm too, so us cats don’t mind them either. When she comes into the catio with her morning coffee she has to ‘release’ some of these ‘itsy bitsies’ from their webs with a wave of a stick in order to get through, and they go scurrying to the corners. This is my chance to introduce myself. But as you can see below, Mr Spider is not willing to play with me. He is known as the Cross Orbweaver

Sunday Selfie: Pansy Buffet for Ollie

Last updated February 22nd, 2018

Hello everyone! I’m Ollie and I’m happy to be featuring in our first Sunday Selfie ever, hosted by The Cat on my Head – Kitties Blue. This is a momentous event for me so I will be putting my best paw forward. So in keeping with selfie culture on the inter-webs I have a few great angled shots and I think I have found my ‘good’ side.  But here’s the thing, I absolutely love pansies and when faced with a bunch, I have to shove my head right in and start masticating like a cow. Those beautiful petals are wonderful to behold, but tastes pretty darn awesome too. Now before you go thinking that I am being a naughty boy, I can assure you that our big lady cat plants them especially for us cats! It’s safe for us to eat and guess, what? It’s so irresistible that the big lady cat herself uses it in summer salads and ice cubes. Now let’s get right to my photo shoot…
