When your cat won’t use his scratching post or cat tree you may feel at your wit’s end. But perk up, because cats love learning, especially when the learning involves something that they were born to do. There are ways to turn your indifferent cat into a tree hugger.

I am a bit of a tree hugger. I cannot see a world without trees. I have pleasant memories of my childhood climbing our mango and avocado trees with my gangly long limbs trying to maneuver as high as I could. I felt happy and free like I could do anything, perched like a happy cat in a tree.

The snow has just melted and rain showers have halted for now. The cats and humans are hopeful we can finally put away the winter clothes and say hello to flowers in a few weeks.

When it was announced that Chirpy Cats won six Certificates of Excellence from the Cat Writers’ Association we were thrilled. It makes me smile when I think of all those hours spent burning the midnight oil, hunched over my keyboard with Sarabi’s head resting on my left wrist.

So there I was on the other side of the world, enjoying breakfasts on the beaches, sunset mountain hikes and whiskers on my face. Yes, cats featured frequently on my vacation and their omnipresence was welcomed. While the Chirpy Cats spent many expeditions in a snowy catio back home in Canada, I did a fair bit of hobnobbing with Cape Town cats from all walks of life! From pampered little furry darlings living the good life, to the UWC Campus cats, cat cafe cats and TUFCAT Sanctuary cats!

It’s that time of the year again when we’re making New Year’s resolutions. Not a fan. Instead, I like affirmations. Because life is like a cat, unpredictable, fast-moving and a little wild. It’s fluid and ever-changing so we need to be open to shift our focus and reboot, which may result in a new and fresh purrspective or a completely different pathway than the one you’ve chosen.
